Electric

The Electricity at Work regulations state that any person working on electrical equipment must be competent. The CITB-ConstructionSkills Essential Electrics scheme will assist you to work safely. This scheme does not meet the current requirements of Building Regulations Part P as it does not refer to; fixed wiring; circuit design; installation and inspection and testing to BS7671 (IEE wiring regulations).

Who's it for?

Individuals such as gas engineers, plumbers, oil technicians and anyone else who works on appliances in the gas, water and oil industries.

How to get an ‘Essential Electrics’ certificate and card

Training and assessment will be based upon safe work, installation, commissioning, fault diagnostics and exchange of electrically operated equipment and components. There are two entry categories based upon knowledge and experience:

Category 1

Applicants must have a recognised qualifications and/or experience from the following industry sectors:

  • Electrical
  • Gas
  • Plumbing
  • Refrigeration

Category 2

  • Applicants from relevant allied trade experience, such as:
  • Plumbing
  • Heating and ventilating
  • Gas
  • Refrigeration

The Essential Electrics scheme is split into six modules:

  • Essential Electrics (pre-requisite to all modules below)
  • Central Heating Controls Fault Finding
  • Central Heating Controls Wiring
  • Combination Boiler Basic Fault Finding
  • Combination Boiler Advanced Fault Finding
  • Basic Refrigeration System Electrics

Renewals and Conversions

Essential Electrics certificates are valid for five years and can be renewed at any approved CITB-ConstructionSkills Centre. You will be notified by CITB-ConstructionSkills six months prior to the expiry of your certificate with details of categories about to lapse.

Why have one?

If you are working with electrics in the gas, water and oil industries being qualified and a card holder:

  • provides evidence of holding an Essential Electrics certificate of achievement (this can be used onsite for employers/clients)
  • meets the requirements of the Electricity at Work Regulations

Information for existing ‘Essential Electrics’ cardholders

If you hold a current registration in one area for example, Central Heating Controls Fault Finding and wish to extend the range of work you do to another for example, Combination Boiler Basic Fault Finding, apply to your nearest centre and undertake the appropriate assessment.

The Essential Electrics module is a pre-requisite to all other modules.

BES provides a range of publications used by approved CITB-ConstructionSkills training centres. These are used as part of training delivery and in some assessments. They can also be used for self-study and workplace reference.

Working to the correct industry standards is vital. Our publications are constantly updated to reflect changes to British Standards, Codes of Practices and industry regulations.
