Oil

Technicians who work with domestic/light commercial oil firing appliances need to provide evidence of competence in this area of work. This can be achieved through registration with the Oil Firing Technical Association (OFTEC).

Registered technicians are exempt from submitting their work to Building Control for inspection when carrying out work in areas covered by their class of registration.

Who's it for?

Gas operatives, plumbers, oil technicians and heating and ventilation engineers and others who wish to meet the requirements of Building Regulations relating to Combustion Appliances. This is in respect to inspection, commissioning and servicing of oil fired boilers.

The CITB-ConstructionSkills approved centre network currently offers assessments in:

  • Oil Firing System Installation (OFT 105E)
  • Oil Firing Commissioning and Servicing – Pressure jet appliances (OFT 101)
  • Oil Firing Commissioning and Servicing – Vaporising appliances (OFT 102)
  • Oil Storage Tank Installation (OFT 600A)

How to get registered

There are two entry points for individuals wishing to undertake assessment:

Category 1

Applicants renewing or extending existing OFTEC qualifications

Category 2

Applicants with a relevant trade background and qualification in either plumbing, heating and ventilation or gas.

Training prior to undertaking assessment is not mandatory, however, in most cases it is recommended to ensure you are aware of the most recent changes to legislation, British Standards and industry best practice. It should be noted that attendance of training courses will not influence independent impartial assessment testing.

Gaining OFTEC registration

A separate application must be made to OFTEC to become OFTEC registered. Details of how to gain registration will be provided in the assessment pack issued to you at the time of your assessment. For further information please consult the OFTEC website contact details below.

Renewals and Conversions

CITB-ConstructionSkills ‘Certificate of Competence’ is valid for five years from the date of successful completion. You will be notified by CITB-ConstructionSkills six months prior to the expiry of any categories.

Why have one?

Being qualified and working with oil firing appliances you;

  • gain recognition as an OFTEC approved technician
  • meet the requirements of the Building Regulations requirements for combustion appliances
  • do not have to have your oil work inspected by Building Regulations.

Information for existing OFTEC technicians

If you hold a current registration OFTEC registration in one appliance (Pressure Jet appliances OFT 101, for example) and wish to extend the range of work you do to another (Vaporising appliances OFT 102, for example) you can apply to their nearest centre and undertake the appropriate assessment to enable you to achieve this.
