If you've got a real passion for computers, and want to use your skills for something exciting and satisfying, it's definitely worth thinking about a career in construction.
CAD technicians use computer generated drawings to prepare the information needed for a construction job. This can involve working across a wide range of fields, including architecture, building services, building, civil and structural engineering.
There are also Civil Engineering Technician roles to consider. These technicians work in constructing roads, bridges, tunnels and other major construction projects.
With such a large proportion of the work involving computers, you must be proficient with a computer and enjoy working in this environment. However, you'll also get to work on-site, working through the design and producing the information required to get a job finished.
You will also need to have good communicational skills, an interest in art and design and have a good understanding of construction methods and processes.
Entrants wishing to train as a CAD operative will usually need GCSE passes (A-C) / Standard Grades (1-3) in Maths, Science and Technology, which will be useful for the calculations, measurements and theory.
Alternatively, by achieving a BTEC, NC, HND or HNC in engineering surveying, you can by employed in a trainee technician post. You will be likely to start off as an engineering operative or draftsperson, doing the most routine aspects of technical drawing. You will then be able to train as an engineering technician and work towards NVQ/SVQ Level 3 of CAD Operation or the City & Guilds Certificate.
Training is done on-the-job, with theory work being done by day release to college and workplace assessments.
