There has been little change in the percentage of women employed over the past 10 years. However, during the same period, some sectors have gained increasing numbers of ethnic minorities.
Primary industries, Energy and Water and Construction, have been least able to recruit from this pool. This is despite HESA 2002/3 figures showing a healthy percentage of women (23%) and resident ethnic minorities (13%) as first-year under-graduates on construction-related courses.
The percentage of women is even higher in some subjects, for example, in Town & Country Planning (41%), Environmental Technologies (40%) and Architecture (31%).
However, construction has achieved a 1% increase in ethnic minority recruitment since 2000, in what looks like a slight upward trend.
