Building a Better Tomorrow Today
Sustainability is the challenge of our time.
As individuals and businesses we all have an important role to play in shaping the future of our planet and in developing the economic, social and environmental fabric of the country in which we live. As operators within the construction industry you have an even bigger role to play.
The construction industry is not only a major contributor to improving the quality of the built environment but during the course of this activity it also impacts on the wider environment. In 2006 alone, the energy used in constructing, occupying and operating buildings represented about 50% of greenhouse gas emissions in the UK and the waste produced in construction and demolition represented 19% of total UK waste.
With the rate of construction in the UK set to increase, sustainable construction is more important than ever particularly in helping to deliver the Government’s targets of a 60% reduction in the 1990 level of emissions by 2050. Sustainability is also of increasing importance to the efficient, effective and responsible operation of business, impacting on your company’s reputation and ultimately its profitability.
As a responsible company, you may already be considering the wider aspects of your environmental policy, monitoring your waste management, calculating your carbon footprint or reviewing your Corporate Social Responsibility programme.
Together with the Environmental Consultancy of the University of Sheffield we have developed a series of courses to help provide people with the knowledge and skills they need to become skilled in modern and sustainable building techniques.
Much of what is needed to deliver sustainability may not be within our direct control but it’s time we all took responsibility to facilitate positive change and instigate best practice.
